Finding Your Purpose and Reconnecting to What Is Meaningful

The first principle of resilience that we talk about in our Resilient Leadership training is the importance of reconnecting to what brings you meaning and purpose in your life. When I first read about this principle, I immediately thought of when I was downsized from my journalism job in the mid-90s.

I weathered that change in my life because I had taken steps earlier to reconnect with my purpose and focus on what was meaningful.   I found new outlets for my creativity by leading a youth group and beginning photography lessons. I also began writing murder mysteries and testing them on my friends.

I love creating.  For me the act of creating is what gives me meaning and purpose in my work. Jobs that have truly fulfilled me have all had this at their core. The freedom to take an idea, develop, design and create something has always energized and fulfilled me.  But it wasn’t always like that.

I didn’t always know what worked.

Why is it that too often we have to wait until a major life event happens to realize we have lost purpose or meaning? The trick is to think about this before we experience significant loss or change.
